Debunk common myths about AI. Understand why AI isn't sentient, isn't always right, and doesn't replace human judgment.
AI Is Not Sentient
Despite conversational fluency, AI models don't have consciousness, feelings, or self-awareness. When a model says "I think" or "I feel," it's generating patterns that match how humans express these concepts in text. There's no inner experience behind the words. Anthropomorphizing AI leads to misplaced trust, unrealistic expectations, and poor decision-making about when and how to use these tools.
AI Is Not Always Right
Confident-sounding language doesn't equal accuracy. Models generate the most statistically likely continuation of text, not necessarily the most truthful one. They can be confidently wrong, internally contradictory, and unable to distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources in their training data. The fluency of AI responses often creates an illusion of authority that isn't warranted — always verify critical information independently.
AI Does Not Replace Human Judgment
AI is a tool, not an oracle. It lacks the contextual understanding, ethical reasoning, and accountability that human judgment provides. Using AI outputs without critical evaluation can lead to errors in medicine, law, hiring, finance, and other high-stakes domains. The most effective AI use combines model capabilities with human oversight, domain expertise, and critical thinking.
Training Myths
Common misconceptions about AI training include: that models learn from your conversations in real-time (most don't), that bigger models are always better (diminishing returns exist), that models understand what they generate (they manipulate statistical patterns), and that AI will inevitably reach human-level general intelligence (this is speculation, not certainty). Understanding how models actually work helps set appropriate expectations.
